Military & Local Hero Calendar
2025 Holidays & Celebrations
(and other notable dates)
Revised 01/18/2025
Most are quite familiar with Memorial Day (the last Monday in May) and Independence Day (July 4th), and to a lesser degree, Veterans Day (November 11th). But few realize that there are also a number of other days of recognition for our military and first responder, or local hero communities.
Military recognition days include holidays and observances that honor the service and sacrifice of the military. Memorial Day is a federal holiday held to honor deceased service members. It was originally known as Decoration Day. On the other hand, Veterans Day is a non-federal holiday to honor veterans and to thank current service members. We should all take a moment to appreciate the courage of those who have served and continue to serve.
But veterans are not the only ones proudly serving their country. There are more than 4.6 million First Responders, or Local Heroes in the country. Firefighters, emergency medical technicians (EMTs), police officers, sheriff’s deputies and other personnel respond to the worst-case scenarios in our communities. First responders are the backbone of our community, responding to emergencies and other issues with bravery and professionalism.
And I’d like to note that there is also a significant transition that many veterans make – that of stepping into the role of first responders. For countless veterans, their call to serve continues beyond their military service. Many of our nation’s first responders, including firefighters, police officers, and paramedics, are veterans who have chosen to protect and serve their communities in a new capacity. Their commitment to safeguarding others is a testament to their unyielding spirit and dedication.
In moments of crisis, when seconds count and lives are on the line, these local heroes emerge as our community’s lifeline. They are dedicated professionals – police officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel and others – and they display extraordinary courage and commitment, often in the face of unimaginable challenges.
First responders are first on the scene during emergencies, whether it’s a medical crisis, a fire, or a public safety or policing incident. Their swift actions can mean the difference between life and death. Equipped with specialized training and a profound sense of duty, they work tirelessly to protect and serve, often putting their own lives at risk.
The Military & Local Hero Calander, shown below, provides designated times to recognize, celebrate and express our deepest gratitude to all who have worn the uniform, and to reflect on the immense sacrifices made by those who selflessly serve our country. It also reminds us of the strong bond between military and first responder communities, each playing a crucial role in ensuring our safety, security and freedoms.
